Napoleon's Farewell. [From the French.]

  1. 1Farewell to the Land, where the gloom of my Glory
  2. 2Arose and o'ershadowed the earth with her name--
  3. 3She abandons me now--but the page of her story,
  4. 4The brightest or blackest, is filled with my fame.
  5. 5I have warred with a World which vanquished me only
  6. 6When the meteor of conquest allured me too far;
  7. 7I have coped with the nations which dread me thus lonely,
  8. 8The last single Captive to millions in war.
  1. 9Farewell to thee, France! when thy diadem crowned me,
  2. 10I made thee the gem and the wonder of earth,--
  3. 11But thy weakness decrees I should leave as I found thee,
  4. 12Decayed in thy glory, and sunk in thy worth.
  5. 13Oh! for the veteran hearts that were wasted
  6. 14In strife with the storm, when their battles were won--
  7. 15Then the Eagle, whose gaze in that moment was blasted
  8. 16Had still soared with eyes fixed on Victory's sun!
  1. 17Farewell to thee, France!--but when Liberty rallies
  2. 18Once more in thy regions, remember me then,--
  3. 19The Violet still grows in the depth of thy valleys;
  4. 20Though withered, thy tear will unfold it again--
  5. 21Yet, yet, I may baffle the hosts that surround us,
  6. 22And yet may thy heart leap awake to my voice--
  7. 23There are links which must break in the chain that has bound us,
  8. 24Then turn thee and call on the Chief of thy choice!
