Sonnet[;] On Quitting School for College
- 1Farewell parental scenes! a sad farewell!
- 2To you my grateful heart still fondly clings,
- 3Tho' fluttering round on Fancy's burnish'd wings
- 4Her tales of future Joy Hope loves to tell.
- 5Adieu, adieu! ye much-lov'd cloisters pale!
- 6Ah! would those happy days return again,
- 7When 'neath your arches, free from every stain,
- 8I heard of guilt and wonder'd at the tale!
- 9Dear haunts! where oft my simple lays I sang,
- 10Listening meanwhile the echoings of my feet,
- 11Lingering I quit you, with as great a pang,
- 12As when erewhile, my weeping childhood, torn
- 13By early sorrow from my native seat,
- 14Mingled its tears with hers--my widow'd Parent lorn.
