Absence[;] A Farewell Ode on Quitting School for Jesus College,
Cambridge
- 1Where graced with many a classic spoil
- 2CAM rolls his
reverend stream along,
- 3I haste to urge the learnéd toil
- 4That sternly chides my love-lorn song:
- 5Ah me! too mindful of the days
- 6Illumed by Passion's orient rays,
- 7When Peace, and Cheerfulness and Health
- 8Enriched me with the best of wealth.
- 9Ah fair Delights! that o'er my soul
- 10On Memory's wing, like shadows fly!
- 11Ah Flowers! which Joy from Eden stole
- 12While Innocence stood smiling by!--
- 13But cease, fond Heart! this bootless moan:
- 14Those Hours on rapid Pinions flown
- 15Shall yet return, by Absence crown'd,
- 16And scatter livelier roses round.
- 17The Sun who ne'er remits his fires
- 18On heedless eyes may pour the day:
- 19The Moon, that oft from Heaven retires,
- 20Endears her renovated ray.
- 21What though she leave the sky
unblest
- 22To mourn awhile in murky vest?
- 23When she relumes her lovely light,
- 24We bless the Wanderer of the Night.
