Ode
- 1Ye Gales, that of the Lark's repose
- 2The impatient Silence break,
- 3To yon poor Pilgrim's wearying Woes
- 4Your gentle Comfort speak!
- 5He heard the midnight whirlwind die,
- 6He saw the sun-awaken'd Sky
- 7Resume its slowly-purpling Blue:
- 8And ah! he sigh'd--that I might find
- 9The cloudless Azure of the Mind
- 10And Fortune's brightning Hue!
- 11Where'er in waving Foliage hid
- 12The Bird's gay Charm ascends,
- 13Or by the fretful current chid
- 14Some giant Rock impends--
- 15There let the lonely Cares respire
- 16As small airs thrill the mourning Lyre
- 17And teach the Soul
her native Calm;
- 18While Passion with a languid Eye
- 19Hangs o'er the fall of Harmony
- 20And drinks the sacred Balm.
- 21Slow as the fragrant whisper creeps
- 22Along the lilied Vale,
- 23The alter'd Eye of Conquest weeps,
- 24And ruthless grows pale
- 25Relenting that his Heart forsook
- 26Soft Concord of auspicious Look,
- 27And Love, and social Poverty;
- 28The Family of tender Fears,
- 29The Sigh, that saddens and endears,
- 30And Cares, that sweeten Joy.
- 31Then cease, thy frantic Tumults cease,
- 32Ambition, Sire of War!
- 33Nor o'er the mangled Corse of Peace
- 34Urge on thy scythéd Car.
- 35And oh! that Reason's voice might swell
- 36With whisper'd Airs and holy Spell
- 37To rouse thy gentler Sense,
- 38As bending o'er the chilly bloom
- 39The Morning wakes its soft Perfume
- 40With breezy Influence.
