To the Autumnal Moon Autumnal
Moon
- 1Mild Splendour of the various-vested Night!
- 2Mother of wildly-working visions!
hail!
- 3I watch thy gliding, while with watery light
- 4Thy weak eye glimmers through a fleecy veil;
- 5And when thou lovest thy pale orb to shroud
- 6Behind the gather'd blackness lost on high;
- 7And when thou dartest from the wind-rent cloud
- 8Thy placid lightning o'er the awaken'd sky.
- 9Ah such is Hope! as changeful and as fair!
- 10Now dimly peering on the wistful sight;
- 11Now hid behind the dragon-wing'd Despair:
- 12But soon emerging in her radiant might
- 13She o'er the sorrow-clouded breast of
Care
- 14Sails, like a meteor kindling in its flight.
