To the Autumnal Moon Autumnal Moon

  1. 1Mild Splendour of the various-vested Night!
  2. 2Mother of wildly-working visions! hail!
  3. 3I watch thy gliding, while with watery light
  4. 4Thy weak eye glimmers through a fleecy veil;
  5. 5And when thou lovest thy pale orb to shroud
  6. 6Behind the gather'd blackness lost on high;
  7. 7And when thou dartest from the wind-rent cloud
  8. 8Thy placid lightning o'er the awaken'd sky.
  1. 9Ah such is Hope! as changeful and as fair!
  2. 10Now dimly peering on the wistful sight;
  3. 11Now hid behind the dragon-wing'd Despair:
  4. 12But soon emerging in her radiant might
  5. 13She o'er the sorrow-clouded breast of Care
  6. 14Sails, like a meteor kindling in its flight.
