To the Author of 'The Robbers'
- 1Schiller! that hour I would have wish'd to die,
- 2If thro' the shuddering midnight I had sent
- 3From the dark dungeon of the Tower time-rent
- 4That fearful voice, a famish'd Father's cry--
- 5Lest in some after moment aught more mean
- 6Might stamp me mortal! A triumphant shout
- 7Black Horror scream'd, and all her goblin rout
- 8Diminish'd shrunk from the more withering scene!
- 9Ah! Bard tremendous in sublimity!
- 10Could I behold thee in thy loftier mood
- 11Wandering at eve with finely-frenzied eye
- 12Beneath some vast old tempest-swinging wood!
- 13Awhile with mute awe gazing I would brood:
- 14Then weep aloud in a wild ecstasy!
