To the Author of 'The Robbers'

  1. 1Schiller! that hour I would have wish'd to die,
  2. 2If thro' the shuddering midnight I had sent
  3. 3From the dark dungeon of the Tower time-rent
  4. 4That fearful voice, a famish'd Father's cry--
  5. 5Lest in some after moment aught more mean
  6. 6Might stamp me mortal! A triumphant shout
  7. 7Black Horror scream'd, and all her goblin rout
  8. 8Diminish'd shrunk from the more withering scene!
  9. 9Ah! Bard tremendous in sublimity!
  10. 10Could I behold thee in thy loftier mood
  11. 11Wandering at eve with finely-frenzied eye
  12. 12Beneath some vast old tempest-swinging wood!
  13. 13Awhile with mute awe gazing I would brood:
  14. 14Then weep aloud in a wild ecstasy!
