To William Godwin; Author of 'Political Justice'
- 1O form'd t' illume a sunless world forlorn,
- 2As o'er the chill and dusky brow of Night,
- 3In Finland's wintry skies the Mimic Morn[86:2]
- 4Electric pours a stream of rosy light,
- 5Pleas'd I have mark'd OPPRESSION,terror-pale,
- 6Since, thro' the windings of her dark machine,
- 7Thy steady eye has shot its glances keen--
- 8And bade th' All-lovely 'scenes at distance hail'.
- 9Nor will I not thy holy guidance bless,
- 10And hymn thee, GODWIN! with an ardent lay;
- 11For that thy voice, in Passion's stormy day,
- 12When wild I roam'd the bleak Heath of Distress,
- 13Bade the bright form of Justice meet my way--
- 14And told me that her name was HAPPINESS.
